Fluorsid Cavendish Mill
The Cavendish Mill, a new and ambitious mineral treatment plant near Stoney Middleton, marked a dynamic expansion in the North Derbyshire industrial landscape. Unparalleled in Europe and perhaps the world, this important undertaking was opened by the Duke of Devonshire. Set in an isolated, empty landscape, the Cavendish Mill was a significant economic and employment boost for the local Peak District region - an extension of the former small Cupola Works that represented a vigorous rejuvenation for industry in the area. Despite this fanfare, the mill's name was not immediately settled, with "Victory Mill" initially proposed to reflect the site's previous history and the story of struggle and success.
The official opening ceremony in 1965 even coincided with the tercentenary commemoration of the Eyam Plague, making the occasion all the more historically significant. Sadly, the Cavendish Mill would ultimately cease operations in 2023, resulting in the loss of around 40 jobs.
