Crewe Electricity Works
The Crewe Corporation Electricity Works was established in the early 1900s, utilizing steam engines to power the DC generators that operated until the late 1950s. Over time, the town transitioned from DC to AC power. The DC network remained in place until every property was connected to the AC supply. Once this upgrade was complete, the machinery was removed, and the building was repurposed as district stores until its move in 1967 to a new location on Macon Way. The main structure consists of two large sheds, with the rear shed being a more recent addition. The original shed, built from red brick adorned with a purple brick pattern, features a distinctive semi-circular tile insert above the main entrance. Inside, the building still retains the original hand-operated crane. Initially, coal for the boilers was transported by horse and cart from the nearby Thomas Street coal yard, where it was then funneled into a chute close to the riverbank. Additionally, water from the river was used to cool the plant's water supply.
In February 2025 the Electricity Works was demolished with the land left vacant.
