Burtonwood Services Subway

The motorway services first opened in August 1974. There were two buildings, one on each side of the road. Architect Patrick Gwynne designed the buildings with their unique cone-shaped roofs. Sadly, one building has since been knocked down. The westbound side closed in 2008. Now, all traffic uses the eastbound side, reached from the roundabout. A developer now owns the old westbound site. Back in the 80s, bands travelling between Manchester and Liverpool often stopped here. It became a place for autograph hunters. Bands such as Tears for Fears and Yazoo were regular visitors.

Marshalls bought the Westbound site. They are redeveloping it for shops and businesses, calling the new site Gemini 8. So far, a Travelodge motel and a Starbucks have opened. A Harvester restaurant is also open. Since July 2014, a pub/restaurant called the Skymaster has been trading. Marston's Inns and Taverns runs it. Gemini 8 is next to Gemini Retail Park and is accessed from Junction 8. This report focuses on the underpass that once linked the West and Eastbound sites, this infastructure is nothing special but is in fairly good condition and features so 1970s telework.
