The Crystal Ballroom

Initially established as a snooker hall in the 1950s on the grounds of a former coal yard, the structure was revamped into the Crystal Ballroom dance hall in 1958, becoming a key location for the local Big Band scene. Over the years, the building experienced several transformations in name and purpose, eventually becoming known as The Zanzibar, which ceased operations in 2004.

When I visited in 2015, it was evident that the building had fallen into disrepair, with parts of the interior missing and black mold spreading throughout. A few years later, it briefly reopened as an antiques market, but this venture was short-lived, and the building was soon closed once more. Ultimately, the entire site was demolished.
