Jubilee Swimming Pool
The King Edward VII Memorial Baths were inaugurated in 1906 on Brunswick Street, with an investment of £15,574. This impressive structure featured two swimming pools measuring 100ft by 35ft and 50ft by 20ft, along with Turkish baths and 12 wash baths. By 1935, the Newcastle Baths had earned a reputation as the finest in the area, boasting water that was ‘aerated, cleansed, and purified’ thanks to a modern filtration system. Interestingly, during the winter months, the main pool was drained and repurposed for tennis and badminton matches. The facility underwent several renovations in 1921, 1938-39, and 1946.
Initially equipped with two Cornish steam boilers, these were later replaced by Lancashire boilers in the 1960s. The building received a significant refurbishment in the 1970s and reopened as Jubilee Baths in 1977. In December 2010, a new swimming pool and leisure center named 'Jubilee 2' was established on adjacent land. Since then, the original Jubilee Baths have remained unused. In 2010, Newcastle Council proposed demolishing the site to develop six new retail units and an apartment complex. Although these plans were delayed, demolition work has recently commenced on the old pool and gym.
