The Royalty Cinema

Nestled in the Harborne area of southwest Birmingham, at the intersection of High Street and Greenfield Road, the Royalty Cinema first opened its doors on October 20, 1930, showcasing Maurice Chevalier in "The Love Parade." This charming venue was established and managed by the local independent company, Selly Oak Pictures Ltd.

In March 1935, the cinema came under the ownership of the Associated British Cinemas (ABC) chain. Unfortunately, it closed its doors for the last time on November 2, 1963, with Cliff Robertson starring in "P.T.109." Following its closure, the space was transformed into an Alpha Bingo Club, also run by ABC, and later became a Mecca Bingo Club. By 2010, it was functioning as a Gala Bingo Club until its closure around 2012. The vacant building experienced a minor fire in November 2017, followed by a significant blaze at 4 a.m. on September 19, 2018, which nearly obliterated the structure.

In the summer of 2011, the Royalty Cinema was recognised as a Grade II Listed building by English Heritage.
