The Empire Theatre
The Theatre first opened its doors on Monday, October 29, 1894, showcasing a variety show and accommodating 1,935 patrons. In 1909, James Pringle took over the venue, introducing films into the lineup. The auditorium underwent a significant renovation in 1911, designed by the renowned theatre architect Bertie Crewe, which reduced the seating capacity to 1,808. After its grand reopening on September 11, 1911, it held the title of Burnley's premier theatre until 1930.
The Empire Theatre closed its doors in June 1955 but was revived by the independent Buxton Cinemas chain in December of the same year. It changed hands to the Star Cinemas chain in December 1958 and transitioned into a bingo hall in the mid-1960s, when the bingo operations moved from the nearby Palace-Hippodrome Theatre. In 1996, the Empire Theatre was recognized as a Grade II Listed building by English Heritage. As of 2015, the structure remains unused and is in a state of significant disrepair.
